The Storm Report: Training Camp Day Two

TAMPA BAY – The players and coaches got an early start to the day as the first horn of practice sounded off at 6:25 AM. Under the lights and dark skies, the team looked to follow up on the excitement from Day One as the team continued to install its new offense. By the end of the second practice session all of the new offense was installed.

The quarterbacks and wide receivers seemed to quickly grasp the offense. “The defense gave us some good looks today,” said offensive coordinator John Gregory. “That definitely helped the installation process.”  With the offense installed it now important for the offensive players to concentrate on the little things and work on the mental part of the game to avoid mistakes.

A common theme amongst the coaches was perseverance. With players arriving at 5:30 AM and the final practice ending at 5:30 PM it made for a long day.  “Today was a long day,” said head coach Dave Ewart. “But it was a good day. I saw a lot of adjustments being made and offensively we were cleaner with the ball

Looking Forward: The team returns to its regular practice schedule Monday with the first practice session starting at 9:00 AM and ending at 11:00 AM and the second session from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.  The defense will wrap up its installation and on Tuesday the team gets to strap on the pads for the first time.

Coaches Perspective: “I was pleased we were able to get all of the offense installed by the end of the second day,” said Storm offensive coordinator John Gregory. “This will now allow us to focus and concentrate on the little things as we prepare for the season.”

Quote of the Day: “The offense is a lot of fun,” said returning wide receiver and former South Florida standout Amarri Jackson. “It provides the [the receivers] with some flexibility and the ability to adjust to the defender.”

Player Spotlight: Defensive back Tavious Polo joined the Storm late in the 2011 season for the final two games of the season. In each game he recorded an interception and seems to have picked up where he left off last season as he snagged two interceptions during the team period in the second session of the day.

Guest Appearance: Former Tampa Bay Storm quarterback and offensive coordinator John Kaleo was out at training camp today. He runs Kaleo Quarterback Academy and helps to develop young high school quarterbacks. He swung by to take in some of camp and share some of his thoughts. “I was impressed with how professional things were,” said Kaleo. “You can tell Derrick Brooks is making a mark providing the team with a refreshing new start. It has to make the players feel good about the way they are running things now.”
