CHICAGO – The Kansas City Command have acquired defensive lineman Cliff Dukes from the Tampa Bay Storm in exchange for starting quarterback Steve Wasil, the League office announced Tuesday.
Dukes (6-3, 280, Michigan State) was named the League’s Game Tape Exchange Defensive Lineman of the Year after leading the League and setting a Storm franchise record with 16.0 tackles for loss last season.
An All-Arena selection in 2010 and 2011, Dukes has collected a league-high 21.5 sacks over the past two seasons, including 12.5 last year. He earned Defensive Player of the Week honors twice in 2011, once for his four-sack performance against the New Orleans VooDoo in Week 1, and again in Week 11 against the Spokane Shock after recording three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and a blocked kick. Dukes has played his entire AFL career in Tampa Bay.
In exchange for Dukes, the Tampa Bay Storm received quarterback Steve Wasil (6-3, 220, Albion), who began last season as a backup in Kansas City, but took over the starting job for the final five games of 2011. He passed for more than 300 yards twice and was named the League’s National Guard MVP in Week 15 for his five-touchdown performance against the Cleveland Gladiators.
Wasil becomes the third quarterback acquired by Tampa Bay in the last two weeks. The Storm traded for Spokane’s Kyle Havens on January 27 and were assigned rookie Trevor Vittatoe on Wednesday. The three will compete with second-year man Matt Grothe for the starting quarterback job, left vacant by Nick Hill, who was signed by the Green Bay Packers in early January.
The Storm host the Command in Week 8 at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Monday, April 30.
