SALT LAKE CITY – Day one of training camp is officially in the books, as the Utah Blaze practiced as a team for the first time on Saturday night. Utah gathered at Spence Eccles Field House to open training camp 2012 with the first of three non-padded practice sessions.
“Day one of practice was a spirited affair,” said President & Head Coach Ron James. “The players were anxious to get out on the field and run through drills with their teammates. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for our first game, but the team looks ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead.”
The group that made the strongest initial impression had to be the defensive line. Although the defensive front four has a distinct advantage this early in camp, the coaching staff was encouraged by what they witnessed. Veterans and rookies alike displayed ferocious pass rushing skills and the unit as a whole looks to have a fantastic mix of strength, speed and athletic ability.
“Our defensive front really has a great burst off the football,” said James. “You could see in our first practice that we’re a much more athletic and explosive group than we were all of last season. I'm anxious to see how this young group progresses.”
On the offensive side of the ball, Tommy Grady has picked up right where he left off in 2011. He returned to the field for the first time in over seven months and surpassed early expectations. Grady looked to be in mid-season form, displaying great timing and rhythm with his receivers. He’s back at full strength and has shown no ill-effects from the season-ending rib injury he suffered last July.
“Tommy looked exceptionally sharp for his first practice. His leadership will be the key to how our offense operates all season long. So far, it looks like he is focused and ready to take on the AFL in 2012."
Utah resumed training camp Sunday morning with a private practice session. The team will hit the field again tomorrow from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for its final non-padded practice at Spence Eccles Field House, located at 650 South Guardsman Way in Salt Lake City. As always, Monday’s practice is open to the public. Fans are encouraged to come get an early look at the 2012 Utah Blaze.
