Blaze Assigned Standout, Dual-Threat Passer

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze has added former Kansas State quarterback Carson Coffman to the 2012 roster, announced Blaze President & Head Coach Ron James. The move reunites Coffman with current Blaze wide receiver Ernie Pierce (6-4, 209, Kansas State).

“We are excited to see what Carson can do in the AFL game,” said James. “He had a strong college career at Kansas State and is capable of making all the throws necessary to be successful at the professional level. As we round out the remainder of our training camp roster, we are still adding key pieces to the ball club. Carson Coffman will contribute greatly to our championship level of play.”

Coffman (6-3, 215) concluded his collegiate career at Kansas State with 3,224 passing yards and 17 touchdowns while completing an impressive 63.4 percent of his attempts. He ranks fourth all-time in KSU history with a passer efficiency rating of 134.0. Coffman also brought an element of athleticism to the quarterback position, as he rushed for 278 yards and 12 more scores on 181 carries.

As a senior in 2010, Coffman led Kansas State to its first bowl appearance in seven years. He delivered career-highs with 2,060 yards and 14 touchdowns on 171-of-263 passing (65.0%). At the same time, he finished second on the team with nine touchdown runs. That number was topped only by Wildcats running back Daniel Thomas, who was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Coffman finished fourth in the Big 12 Conference with a passer efficiency rating of 143.1, as that mark also placed fifth on the school’s single-season record chart. At Kansas State’s postseason banquet, he was presented with the Anthony A. Bates Memorial Award, honoring his unselfishness and commitment to team unity.

“Salt Lake City is a wonderful place and the Blaze is a great organization,” said Coffman. “I’m blessed to have the opportunity and I can’t wait to get started!”

Coffman comes from a lineage rich in football success. His father, Paul Coffman, was selected to the Pro Bowl three times during his 11-year NFL career as a tight end with the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings. His older brother, Chase Coffman, was drafted in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
