AFL Teams Look to Finalize Rosters in Open Tryouts

With training camp only a few weeks away, Arena Football League player personnel departments are working diligently to finalize their opening day rosters.

In an effort to exhaust all their resources, several teams are holding final open tryouts at local sports complexes. Four of those teams – the Arizona Rattlers, Georgia Force, New Orleans VooDoo and Philadelphia Soul – are holding those tryouts this weekend.

Although each tryout will be tailored to each team’s particular interests, participants can expect a tryout similar to a “combine” workout, complete with 40 yard-dashes, position-specific drills and one-on-one competitions.

“We are looking for tough, hard working, and talented players and this will be the first chance for potential candidates to showcase their abilities,” Georgia Force Head Coach Dean Cokinos said of the team’s upcoming workouts.

Georgia’s open tryouts will be held at Silverbacks Sports Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 9 a.m. ET.

The New Orleans VooDoo – who will also hold tryouts on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. ET at Tad Gormley Stadium – actually added two players at their last opening tryout.

The Philadelphia Soul also found two players in an earlier workout and snagged three future starters– Nyere Aumaitre, Jerome Hayes and Keith Stokes –from last year’s open tryouts. The Soul’s tryouts will be held at the NovaCare Complex in Philadelphia on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Last year’s ArenaBowl runner-up, the Arizona Rattlers, will hold their own workouts at the Gene Autry Sports Complex in Mesa, Arizona at the same time.

“Open tryouts are tremendous opportunities for prospective athletes to showcase their talents at the highest level,” Arena Football League Director of Football Operations, Joe Kleinsmith, said. “Players need to come focused with the right mindset and have confidence in their abilities.”

Three more teams have scheduled open tryouts in the month of February before training camps open on the 18th. The Spokane Shock and Chicago Rush will hold workouts the first weekend in February, while the Tampa Bay Storm will give potential players one more opportunity to crack the squad the following weekend.

Each tryout requires a registration fee; however, special discounts may be available for participants who register early. More information is available on each team’s respective website.
