Fans will have one week to select from one of four name options!
ALBANY- The NEW Albany Arena Football team is proud to announce that it has narrowed down the options for the name of the team to four choices: Albany Phoenix, Albany Empire, Albany Machine and Albany Fire. These names were selected based on the over 2,000 team name suggestions submitted by fans through
. Fans can now vote for their final selection choice by visiting
beginning now through Wednesday, November 15 at 11:59pm. Fans can vote once daily.
The Albany Phoenix: In Greek Mythology, a Phoenix is a long-lived bird that obtains new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor with a renewed youth and vigor. This name pays homage to the original iteration of the Arena Football League in Albany, the Albany Firebirds. The Phoenix represents everything the Firebirds were, but with a new energy and sustainability. The name also represents the resurgence of the greater Albany area.
The Albany Empire: This name pays homage to the city of Albany, the capital of New York, the Empire State. The name also pays recognition to Empire State Plaza in Albany; a complex of several state government buildings which dominate the Albany skyline. The Empire will be the supreme power in the Arena Football League once again.
Albany Machine: This name would recognize Albany's role in politics at the state and local level. The Albany Machine specifically references the City of Albany's "Political Machine" that was in power for the better part of the 20th century. The "Machine" once ran the city of Albany and it can yet again.
Albany Fire: Also paying homage to the original iteration of the Arena Football League in Albany with its namesake, Fire would encompass the passion and energy of city for its new team.
Once the voting process is complete on TimesUnion.com, the team will then select the final team name and begin working on team logos, colors and other branding elements surrounding the name selection. Once that process is complete, which will take approximately four-six weeks, the team will hold a press conference to announce the team name.
