NEW ORLEANS -- Despite matching a season-high 69 points, the Dragons needed an incredible goal line stop in the game's closing seconds to clinch a 69-63 victory over the New Orleans VooDoo, Monday night at New Orleans Arena.
The VooDoo successfully recovered an on-side kick with a minute left in the fourth quarter with the Dragons up by six, setting up a dramatic finish. With just over 30 seconds remaining in the game, the VooDoo had marched down the field and was at first and goal. Instead of running the ball in on one of the next three plays, QB Steve Bellisari elected to run down the clock for one final play on fourth down.
With the VooDoo big men on the field for the final play, Bellisari fell inches short with some impressive work by the Dragons defensive line and secondary to give New York the victory.
"We tried to let them score, so we could get the ball back with some time on the clock," admitted Dragons Head Coach Weylan Harding. "But they decided to milk the clock. You have to give our guys credit, they were resilient tonight."
The win puts the Dragons (5-7) in the sixth and final playoff spot in the National Conference with four games remaining.
Aaron Garcia and the Dragons offense could not be stopped all night, completing drive after drive.
Garcia finished the game 29 of 37 for nine touchdowns, 358 yards and no interceptions. The Dragons offense committed no turnovers and only didn't score a touchdown when time ran out to end the first half.
"After a game like this all you can talk about is the team effort," said Garcia. "From top to bottom everyone fought. We realized it's a crazy game. And young players learn you can play a great game, but it can still come down to the last play. It was a good lesson to learn and we're glad we came out on top."
Helping Garcia tie his season-high nine touchdowns was Kevin Swayne, who caught 13 passes for six touchdowns and 150 yards. Both Mike Horacek and Chris Anthony did not play tonight due to injuries.
"You can't say enough about Aaron and Kevin," said Harding. "The chemistry between them is remarkable. You also have to credit the offensive line that gave Aaron time. Everyone stepped up with guys injured." Also contributing on the scoresheet were Keron Henry, who caught two touchdown passes and Jason Willis, who hauled in one.
"We knew their defense wanted to come out and get a lot of pressure on Aaron," said Swayne. "We have to credit our offensive line for playing great and keeping us in the game."
While the Dragons were flawless in the first half, allowing no turnovers, the VooDoo made two crucial ones. DB DaShane Dennis picked off a Bellisari pass and Henry recovered a Carter Warley kickoff which rang off the uprights.
There was uncertainty as to who would start at the quarterback position for the VooDoo after Andy Kelly failed to lead New Orleans to victory the past four games, but he got the start. However, Kelly went down with a leg injury when he fell over DT John Nix in the first quarter, giving Bellisari a chance to shine, which he did, going 21 of 31 for six touchdowns 247 yards and one interception.
WR Tyronne Jones led all VooDoo receivers with five touchdowns and 123 yards.
