Saint Petersburg, FL -- Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver
Lawrence Samuels, Arena Football’s all-time leading receiver, was in a
multiple-car accident Thursday evening. He suffered injuries to his left
leg and ribs, as well as cuts and abrasions, and was airlifted to BayfrontMedicalCenter.
He is currently in stable condition after having surgery
early this afternoon to repair his left tibia and fibula. Doctors at
Bayfront will continue to monitor his recovery until early next week. He
will begin physical therapy starting tomorrow morning.
“As a member of our Storm family, the primary concern for Lawrence right now is his
health and speedy recovery,” said head coach and general manager Tim Marcum.
“We will support he and his family in whatever way we can as they work with the
Bayfront medical team through his recovery and the healing process. As a
player he has been a key component to the success of the Storm for a long time,
and in the future, should he look to come back to the field, we will work to
keep him a part of the Storm organization.”
Samuels’ vehicle was struck by another vehicle and sent off
the road into a tree. He was traveling with his two-year old daughter, who
was unharmed. The Storm is in contact with the family and medical staff and
will continue to provide updates when available.
Samuels has spent 14 of his 15 seasons in the AFL with the
Tampa Bay Storm. He has 1,020 career receptions for 11,708 yards and 168
touchdowns and has three championship rings. He is currently a free-agent.
